Arkona – Odna

Russian Folk Metal

This is the song that made me fall in love with folk metal – for good reason! Sometimes folk metal bands overload the song with traditional instruments just to say “Hey! look how folk we are!” Arkona is different though. They tastefully mix in traditional instruments with harder singing and melodies. Masha Scream is an amazing talent with her ability to alternate between harsh gutterals and light singing.

More important about Arkona though is their connection to Russia’s ancient Pagan Folk traditions. “Arkona” was the last Slavic Pagan city, that was destroyed in 1168 by the crusade led by bishop Absalon and king Valdemar the Great of Denmark.
