“Life and Debt” is a pun because in the Jamaica accent, “Debt” and “Death” sound almost the same. Jamaica, like many other third world countries, agreed to take out a loan in the 70′s through the IMF, since they saw no other alternative. Now they are living in a debt spiral with no end in sight.
Most Jamaicans today can find little in the way of work or any kind of way to sustain themselves. When there is citizen unrest, they are punished with the most brutal backlash of government sanctioned violence.
The structure of freedom and democracy coming to third world countries is not freedom at all. It is throwing the world’s masses into chaos while the world’s wealthiest members reap the rewards.
